Flame cutting is ideal for cutting carbon steel and most metal alloys where cutting edge precision is not critical, or post machining is required.
Only metals which have oxides with a lower melting point than the base metal itself can be cut with this process, including low carbon steel and some low alloys which can be cut effectively using the oxy-fuel process.DNA Metalwork provide CNC profiling of components up to 10m x 4m x 120mm thickness with four head cutting.
How does it work?
Flame cutting is a thermo-chemical process which requires intense heat (Preheat) and pure oxygen. It begins by heating a spot on the edge/surface of a plate with an oxyfuel flame, and then injects a high pressure stream of pure oxygen through a nozzle once the spot is hot.
As the oxygen stream hits the plate and it begins to burn, iron oxides are formed and cut the plate as the stream of oxygen moves along it.
Heat Affected Zone
Due to the amount of heat generated when flame cutting takes place, the surrounding cold material or the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ) is transformed. This method of cutting creates a risk of softening the steel in the HAZ.
Our highly-skilled team of engineers use plasma and oxyfuel cutting alongside a combination of preheating and controlled cut speeds to reduce HAZ where possible and to reduce the risk of cut edge cracking.
